BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Senior Kristen McCandless and sophomore Julie Brown each recorded two PSAC cuts in freestyle events on Tuesday night from Nelson Fieldhouse Pool as the Shippensburg University women's swimming team dropped a dual meet to host Bloomsburg, 115-90.

“We continue to swim well right now,” head coach Tim Verge said after the meet. “We just went six straight days with great work, and we traveled and swam strong. The team is responding to some great challenges.”

McCandless won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:16.84 that well eclipsed the PSAC qualifying standard. She also came with 0.16 seconds of a victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.52. In that same event, Brown's former teammate, freshman Jen Flinchbaugh, nearly satisfied the PSAC qualifying standard with a time of 2:01.02.

Brown won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events for the second straight week, posting PSAC qualifying times of 24.93 and 54.83 seconds. The times were just off the pace she established last weekend at SU's home pool.

Flinchbaugh, junior Julia Brownrigg, McCandless and Brown combined for a solid early-season time of 3:40.73 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Individually, Brownrigg almost met the PSAC qualifying standards in the 100-yard backstroke after recording a time of 1:01.61.

“We are about one month away from the Patriot Invitational at George Mason and I like where we are,” Verge said. “Our seniors are doing a super job with leadership. We need to stay in the groove.”

Shippensburg will swim from Donald N. Miller Pool at 1 p.m. Saturday in a dual meet against Fairmont State. SU will only have one other home dual meet during the regular season, and it will not take place until January 20 against IUP.
