EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team held a lead for the majority of regulation on Tuesday evening against East Stroudsburg in the first meeting between the two teams since last year's PSAC Championship game but allowed a late second-half goal to the Warriors and had to settle for a 2-2 tie from Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Shippensburg (7-4-2, 2-3-2 PSAC) was facing a PSAC opponent for the first time in 17 days and used an early goal to establish momentum. Freshman Chrissy Black, fresh off a two-goal performance in Saturday's victory over Wheeling Jesuit, scored in the 13th minute off an assist from freshman
Colin Watford. It was the first career point for Watford, who was making his first collegiate start.
East Stroudsburg (4-6-4, 3-3-2) answered 11 minutes later with an unassisted goal by Matthew Geidner – his first of the season. The Warriors out-shot the Raiders 11-10 in the first half and forced junior goalkeeper
Andrew Foran, the reigning PSAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week, to make five saves before intermission.
In the 34th minute, SU took the lead again with a missile off the foot of sophomore tri-captain
Oli Templeton. Templeton ripped a volley from approximately 35 yards out that banged off the crossbar and landed past the goal line for his second tally of the season.
The score remained 2-1 until the 81st minute, when ESU striker Nemanja Nikolic headed in the tying goal after the initial shot by the Warriors hit the crossbar. SU had several chances of its own in the second half, with firing four shots and recording two corner kicks in the final five minutes of regulation. Sophomore
Tom Stagg fired a shot off the crossbar in the 73rd minute.
An already frenzied match took a new turn in the second overtime when ESU's Marc DeFeo was sent off with a red card in the 104th minute. SU applied consistent pressure in the final minutes, recording three penalty corner kicks with the man advantage, but could not achieve the game winner. Each team was assessed four yellow cards in the match as well.
Foran and ESU keeper Sean Murphy made eight saves in the contest. Templeton had six of SU's 22 shots.
Shippensburg will need to win both of its remaining PSAC matches in order to have a chance at reaching the PSAC tournament. SU returns to action at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against West Chester from David See Field.
