ERIE, Pa. – Despite goals from freshman
Michal Sanders and sophomore
Meghan Mahon, the Shippensburg University women's soccer team lost a back-and-forth road battle on Saturday afternoon to Gannon, 3-2.
The Raiders (4-4-3, 2-3-2 PSAC) opened up a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the contest when Sanders scored an unassisted goal.
After a Gannon (5-3-2, 3-3-2) goal at the 21-minute mark, SU was again able to grab the lead before the half ended, as Mahon connected on an assist from senior
Samantha Stuart with four minutes remaining in the period. Stuart's pass bounced over the goalkeepers' head and went off the post before Mahon knocked in the rebound for her first goal on the season.
The Golden Knights' Amanda Sharbaugh scored two goals in the span of five minutes in the second half that gave her a hat trick and her team a 3-2 lead that it would hold onto for the remaining 29 minutes of regulation.
SU came closest to an equalizer at the 76-minute mark, when junior
Molly Sanders had her shot attempt go wide. Sophomore goalkeeper
Shelbie Rackley was tested all afternoon, saving 10 of Gannon's 19 shots.
Shippensburg next travels to Kutztown on Friday, Oct. 7 for a 2 p.m. contest.
