SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team was the victim of an offensive showcase by visiting Gannon in the first half of Sunday afternoon's meeting from Heiges Field House, as the Golden Knights shot 65 percent from the floor and hit seven first-half three-pointers in an 85-72 victory over the Red Raiders.
Shippensburg (5-7) shot 68 percent from the floor in the second half but it was too little too late, as the visitors had already built a 20-point lead by halftime. SU got within 11 points of the lead on two occasions in the second half but never trimmed its deficit to single digits.
Gannon (8-3) had four of its five starters post double figures, including 21 points from Kelvin Agee and 19 points by Stephen Battle. Steve Piotrowicz hit four of GU's eight three-pointers and posted 18 points.
Junior
Craig Van Scyoc had a good shooting game from distance and finished with a team-high 18 points. He was 4-of-6 from three-point range and also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Senior
Jaren Gembe was efficient from the floor with 11 points and a team-high six assists. SU posted a positive assist-to-turnover ratio for the fourth straight game and the sixth time in 12 contests this season.
Sophomore
Will Kirkland posted double digits for the second straight game since his return to the lineup, finishing with 11 points. Junior
Dane Lauber added six points and four assists.
Shippensburg begins PSAC Eastern Division play at 8 p.m. Wednesday inside Heiges Field House against Kutztown.
