LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Junior
Will Royal scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds in his second game back from injury on Tuesday night from Thomas Fieldhouse as the Shippensburg men's basketball team earned its first road win of the season, 72-47 at Lock Haven.
Shippensburg (4-6) shot 50 percent from the floor in each half and took control by limiting the hosts to just eight points over the first 11 minutes of the game. SU held a 30-17 advantage at halftime and never looked back, leading by double digits for the final 33 minutes of the contest.
The Red Raiders posted a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (17-13) for the second straight game as nine different players had at least one assist. Senior
Jaren Gembe had four assists, while juniors
Dane Lauber and
Craig Van Scyoc each had three.
Royal had already grabbed 12 rebounds by halftime and was dominating the glass each minute he was on the floor. He played sparingly in the second half as SU rotated players in and out of the game on a regular basis and rested its starters for the majority of the final frame. His performance marks the most rebounds in one game since Derrick Graff grabbed 19 boards against Bloomsburg on Feb. 18, 2009.
Junior
Jordan Stasyszyn led Shippensburg with 14 points; draining several three-pointers in the second half. Lauber had nine points; Gembe had eight and senior
Justin Minter added seven points off the bench.
All 11 of the players dressed for Shippensburg on Tuesday night had at least two rebounds in the game. The Red Raiders finished with a 44-32 rebounding advantage and shot 46 percent from three-point range.
Shippensburg will host two PSAC crossover games of its own this weekend. The Red Raiders face Clarion at 3 p.m. Saturday before facing Gannon at 3 p.m. Sunday. Both games will be held inside Heiges Field House.
