Will Royal posted his third double-double of the year with 18 points and 11 rebounds on Wednesday night from Heiges Field House while sophomore
John Corrigan delivered a career-high 13 points off the bench but the Shippensburg University men's basketball team dropped an 84-75 decision to Kutztown.
Shippensburg (5-8, 0-1 PSAC East) trailed by 16 points with 11:58 remaining in the game but unleashed an 18-4 run over the next four minutes to get within two points of the lead. SU's momentum hit a crescendo at the 6:41 mark when the Red Raiders appeared to tie the score but had their lay-up erased due to an offensive foul.
Kutztown (8-5, 1-0 PSAC East), who rallied from a 10-point deficit of its own during the first half, put the foot on the gas and quashed the Red Raider rally with an 11-2 run over the next three minutes. The Golden Bears were sent to the free-throw line eight times in a 90-second stretch and made seven of those attempts.
Royal was all over the floor and was efficient from the field, shooting 6-of-9 in the contest. He was also a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. The other Red Raiders were not as fortunate from the charity stripe on Wednesday night, as the remainder of the squad was 10-of-23 (43.4 percent).from the free-throw line.
KU shot 50 percent from the field, marking the fourth opponent out of the last six that has made at least half of its shots against the Red Raiders. SU managed to produce a positive assist-to-turnover ratio for the fifth consecutive game.
Corrigan's previous career high was 10 points in the season opener against Goldey-Beacom. He hit two crucial three-pointers during SU's comeback and also had a put-back with a rebound off a missed free throw. He was 5-of-8 from the floor and hit all three of this three-point attempts.
Junior
Craig Van Scyoc hit three more three-pointers and finished with 10 points as SU's third player in double figures. Senior
Jaren Gembe had eight points and a career-high eight assists while junior
Dane Lauber had nine points and six assists.
Shippensburg hits the road Saturday to face Cheyney from Cope Hall. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
