Women's Volleyball Opens 2010 Season With Strong Competition But Drops Two At Catawba

The Shippensburg University volleyball team opened the 2010 season with a pair of competitive matches against strong opponents but dropped both, losing in five sets to Lenoir-Rhyne [17-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-16, 7-15] and four sets to Armstrong Atlantic State [19-25, 25-23, 19-25, 21-25].

Shippensburg (0-2) rallied with a strong fourth set in its opener versus Lenoir-Rhyne but could not outlast the Bears in the fifth set. The Lady Raiders were tied with the Pirates of AASU at one set each but could not sustain momentum in the final two sets.

In the nightcap, freshman Jill Edwards paced Shippensburg with 20 kills and 15 digs while hitting .289. Sophomore Jenny Pry also recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs, hitting .154.

In the opener, Edwards had 22 kills and eight digs while hitting .267. Sophomore Andrea Heimsoth totaled 40 assists and 10 digs while sophomore Erin Flick contributed seven kills and three aces while hitting .200.

SU returns to action on Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. match with Elizabeth City State and a 5:30 p.m. showdown with host Catawba.
