SHIPPENSBURG - The Shippensburg University football team continues PSAC Eastern Division play this Saturday against Kutztown at 1:05 p.m. from University Field. The Red Raiders are seeking their 400th victory as a NCAA institution.
The game will be broadcast live on Shippensburg University's student radio station, WSYC 88.7 FM and on the internet
here (radio pre-game starts at 12:55 p.m.).
Game Storyline
Shippensburg holds a 44-16-2 lead in the series history. Kutztown's victory in 2007 ended an eight-game Red Raider winning streak but SU has won nine of the last 11 meetings overall. The two teams have met every year since 1984, with Shippensburg holding a 17-9 margin over that span.
Shippensburg is looking to get back on track and even its divisional record but is facing Kutztown - the only undefeated team remaining in the PSAC Eastern Division. The road to a conference title defense is a difficult journey: of SU's first seven games this season, Kutztown is the only squad that had a losing record in 2009. However, the Golden Bears (4-0) are off to their best start in program history.
Red Raider senior tailback
Kevin Marshall has been one of the team's most valuable offensive players through four games. The Scotland School native scored both of Shippensburg's touchdowns last week and became the second consecutive SU player to finish a game with 200 or more all-purpose yards. He ran for 64 yards, averaged 4.6 yards per carry, caught a career-high six passes, and finished with 89 return yards.
Marshall is currently ranked second in Division II for kickoff returns, averaging 39.0 yards per attempt. He is just one yard behind Wayne State's Frederick Bruno. Marshall, who needs just 39 all-purpose yards Saturday to move into sixth on the school's all-time list, ranks 49th in Division II by averaging 136.5 all-purpose yards per game.
The Red Raiders are looking to maintain an impressive streak on the offensive side of the ball, having recorded at least one rushing touchdown in eight straight games. Overall, SU has reached paydirt seven times this season on the ground and averages 143.0 rushing yards per game. Overall, SU has scored at least two touchdowns in 18 straight contests.
When Shippensburg has success through the air, odds are that one of the team's pass completions will go for a big gain. The Red Raiders have had at least one pass completion of 25 yards or more in 36 consecutive games, including touchdown passes this season of 35, 41, 44 and 50 yards.
Defensively, Shippensburg has wreaked havoc in the opponent's backfield. Boasting an average of 8.75 tackles for loss per game, the Red Raiders rank 14th in Division II for the category and third in the PSAC.
Riley Bowen and
Cody Fleming are among the team's individual leaders in tackles for loss per game. The team has compiled at least 6.0 tackles for loss in every game this season and at least 5.0 tackles for loss in 14 consecutive games dating back to Week 2 of the 2009 season.
The Wing-T establishes a strong tempo in the run game. SU has run the ball at least 25 times in 28 straight games and helped the Red Raiders lead the PSAC last season in time of possession. Shippensburg has totaled 300 or more yards of total offense in every game this season.
Steven Adams continues to develop at the quarterback position. Adams has set career highs for pass completions in each of the last two games, including 14 last week against the Pioneers. He ranks seventh in the league with 188.2 passing yards per game, having thrown six touchdown passes and five interceptions.
Several players have stood out along the defensive line, but senior
Erik Van Ness has particularly been making a significant impact in his final season. Van Ness ranks second on the team with 4.5 tackles for loss, totaling 2.0 against Gannon and 2.5 against Clarion. He has also averaged 5.0 total tackles over the last three games.
Overall, junior linebacker
Vinnie Ranauto leads the team with 35 combined tackles. He has totaled 11 tackles in each of the last two games to lead the Red Raiders and has 24 unassisted stops for the season.
