Football Cannot Get Its Rhythm Going In Home Loss to C.W. Post, 31-14

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Senior halfback Kevin Marshall ran for 64 yards and scored two touchdowns on Saturday afternoon from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium but stalled drives and penalties plagued the Shippensburg University football team in a 31-14 loss to C.W. Post.

Marshall was the second consecutive Red Raider to finish a contest with 200 or more all-purpose yards. In addition to his 64 yards on the ground, the senior caught a career-high six passes for 64 yards and also had two kickoff returns for 89 yards. He now has 3,520 career all-purpose yards which ranks seventh in school history, just 38 behind Dave Friese '81.

Shippensburg (1-3, 0-1 PSAC East) appeared to be in position to score the game's first points after a scoreless first quarter, but a 26-yard field goal attempt by freshman Nate Schmidt was blocked.

On the ensuing drive, the Pioneers traveled 80 yards and took a 7-0 lead. C.W. Post appeared to have been stopped on a third-down play early in the drive, but an intriguing pass interference penalty against Shippensburg kept the Pioneers moving down the field.

Marshall returned the ensuing kickoff 52 yards and capped off the drive with a three-yard touchdown on a goal line sweep play. That play was prefaced by a beautiful 40-yard pitch and catch from sophomore quarterback Steven Adams to sophomore split end Bryan Barley.

Before the first half concluded, talented Pioneer tailback Thomas Beverly split the defense and ran untouched into the end zone for a 50-yard touchdown scamper that gave the Pioneers a 14-7 halftime advantage.

Junior linebacker Vinnie Ranauto, who led Shippensburg in total tackles for the second consecutive game, tipped a pass early in the third quarter that was intercepted by cornerback Marcellus Sammons. The turnover led to seven points, as SU orchestrated its most balanced drive of the game (8 plays, 51 yards in 4:05) to tie the score at 14-14 on a 5-yard run to paydirt by Marshall.

C.W. Post (2-2, 1-1 PSAC East) threw two incomplete passes on the next drive but was bailed out by a roughing the passer penalty. Pioneer quarterback Erik Anderwkavich orchestrated an impressive drive deep into Red Raider territory but was stuffed on a third-down run at the SU 3-yard line.

Fourth down plays, however, have been a bugaboo this season for the Red Raiders and the Pioneers converted the gamble with their second touchdown pass of the game to Darnel Williams.

SU got strong running on the afternoon from junior Roshaan McCain, who averaged 7.7 yards per carry. On the second play of the next drive, McCain produced an impressive 18-yard run that was unfortunately negated by an illegal block penalty. The Red Raiders, who had committed just 12 penalties through three games, were whistled for nine flags on Saturday.

Frustration arose on the opening play of the fourth quarter, as Pioneer bruiser Anthony Brunetti converted a third-down play by breaking a 19-yard run. Brunetti ran for 10 more yards on the next play to reach the SU 18-yard line, and the drive ultimately ended with a 32-yard field goal for Pioneer place kicker Paul Stoltz.

With 10 minutes remaining, Adams converted a crucial third-down play with an 18-yard pass to Marshall that put the ball on the C.W. Post 38-yard line. The drive ultimately stalled when Marshall was stopped on a fourth-and-3 play. After a punt, SU once again traveled inside the Pioneer 40-yard line but once again turned the ball over.

Adams completed a career-high 14 passes for 199 yards but threw two interceptions. Barley continued a strong start to the season with three receptions for 95 yards. Five different receivers had a reception of at least 10 yards in the contest.

Shippensburg had two significant streaks snapped, including 15 straight games scoring three or more touchdowns and 16 games with at least one passing touchdown. The Red Raiders did extend their streak of consecutive games with a rushing touchdown to 15.

Next Saturday, Shippensburg will travel to Kutztown for a 1:05 p.m. kickoff.

Notes: Saturday's contest was Parents & Family Day at Shippensburg…the loss is just the second home defeat against a PSAC East opponent since shifting divisions at the start of the 2008 season…SU is now 28-33 all-time in divisional openers.
