Shippensburg and C.W. Post each received three first-place votes in the 2010 PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Coaches Poll but both squads were ranked at third place in the same poll. Both teams also received votes in the original AFCA Coaches Poll.
The Red Raiders are looking to maintain several impressive streaks on the offensive side of the ball. SU has recorded at least one rushing touchdown in 14 straight games, scored three or more total touchdowns in 15 straight games and recorded at least one passing touchdown in 16 straight games.
Last Saturday, Shippensburg halfback
Mike Frenette totaled 224 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns from Memorial Stadium as the Red Raiders used all four quarters of its first road game of the year to defeat Clarion, 28-24. Quarterback
Steven Adams finished with a career-high 12 completions and 223 passing yards while junior linebacker
Vinnie Ranauto had a career-high 11 combined tackles.
Meanwhile, C.W. Post amassed 458 total yards on offense but could not hold off PSAC Western Division opponent Mercyhurst, dropping a 28-20 decision to the Lakers. The balanced Pioneer attack ran for 225 yards, threw for 233 yards, controlled the ball for over 30 minutes and got a tour-de-force performance from Eric Anderwkavich but committed five turnovers. Anderwkavich ran for 160 yards and a touchdown while throwing for 233 yards and two touchdowns.
Shippensburg is 6-1 at home against PSAC Eastern Division opponents since switching over from the Western Division at the start of the 2008 season. C.W. Post is 4-6 in road games against PSAC opponents since joining the league.
Senior tailback
Kevin Marshall led Shippensburg in rushing last weekend with 12 carries for 86 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 3,313 all-purpose yards for his career and has moved into eighth on Shippensburg's all-time list. Marshall is just 10 yards behind his former teammate,
Mike Harris '09.
Shippensburg has been a relatively disciplined group this season, ranking second in the league having committed just 12 total penalties for an average of 34.7 yards per contest. C.W. Post is the second-most penalized team in the PSAC, having committed 24 through three games.
The Red Raider defense has produced on third down - limiting opponents to just a 23.3 percent conversion rate this season (10-of-43). That mark is the best in the PSAC.
The Red Raiders are 28-32 all-time in divisional openers — with all but two of those meetings being against a PSAC Western Division opponent. Head coach
Rocky Rees is 11-9 in these contests.
Shippensburg is hosting its second straight home divisional opener after defeating East Stroudsburg last season, 38-14. SU had not previously won a home divisional opener since 2004, when SU defeated Edinboro 17-10.
