EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. –
The Shippensburg University volleyball team began its PSAC schedule on Friday afternoon with two hard-fought crossovers against IUP and Cal from East Stroudsburg. Every set was close, but the Lady Raiders dropped a 3-1 decision to the Crimson Hawks and a 3-2 decision to the Vulcans.

Shippensburg (4-6, 0-2 PSAC) played close to the vest with unbeaten IUP (10-0, 2-0 PSAC), dropping the four-setter by scores of 22-25, 21-25, 26-24 and 24-26. The match against California (4-6, 2-0 PSAC) was another close one, as the two teams split the opening sets by scores of 21-25, 25-21, 18-25 and 25-20. Unfortunately, in its ninth set of the day, SU ran out of gas and dropped the final frame 15-5.

Friday's match marked the first time that Shippensburg has taken a set from California (Pa.) since Oct. 8, 2005 – a span of six matches. It is the first time that SU has taken at least two sets from Cal in a match since the Lady Raiders earned a 3-1 victory in 1996 under coach Berkley Laite.

Junior Libby Woffindin continues to impress early in the season. By percentage, Woffindin was SU's leading hitter with 20 kills and just five errors while hitting .250. She contributed four service aces, one solo block and four block assists against IUP before offering one ace, one solo block, three block assists and seven digs against Cal.

Sophomore Jenny Pry continued her growth as a solid hitter with 26 kills on just eight errors while hitting .237. She had a double-double in each match, posting 11 kills and 14 digs against IUP along with 15 kills and 16 digs against the Vulcans.

Freshman Jill Edwards was SU's pacesetter for kills in both matches, totaling 13 against IUP and tying Pry with 15 against Cal. Edwards also had double-doubles in both matches, posting 22 digs against the Crimson Hawks and 35 overall in the doubleheader.

On defense, sophomore Lauren Murphy led SU with 53 total digs in the doubleheader and had just one reception error. Sophomore Andrea Heimsoth and junior Julie Fye continued to perform well at setter. Heimsoth totaled 40 assists and 24 digs while Fye compiled 41 assists and 23 digs.

On Saturday, Shippensburg will face two more Western Division foes: Clarion (12:30 p.m.) and Slippery Rock (3 p.m.). Both games will take place at ESU's Koehler Fieldhouse.
