CLARION, Pa. – The Shippensburg University tennis team opened its 2010-11 season on Friday night from Clarion with a competitive match against the Golden Eagles but ultimately fell short, 6-3. SU won three singles flights (No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6) and finished just two points behind in two doubles flights.
Shippensburg (0-1) got singles victories from sophomores
Cassie Sidone and
Lisa Snader as well as freshman
Daniela Delgado, who was competing in her first collegiate match. Sidone and Snader combined for a close match at No. 3 doubles, while freshmen
Andrea Rubin and
Lauren Wagner played to an 8-6 match at No. 2 doubles.
The contest was not considered a conference game for Shippensburg, as the Lady Raiders have been shifted this season to the Eastern Division. SU's East matches during the spring schedule will count toward its divisional record.
SU remains in Clarion and will face IUP at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
