INDIANA, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team took to the road once again and split its opening day of competition Friday at the IUP Tournament held inside Memorial Fieldhouse. SU dropped a four-set match to Alderson-Broaddus before rebounding with a straight-set victory over Shepherd.
Shippensburg (2-4) dominated the Battlers in the first set of its opener but struggled throughout the final three frames. Set scores were 25-10, 24-26, 23-25 and 18-25. Freshman
Jill Edwards totaled eight kills and a game-high 24 digs to pace the SU offense.
Sophomores
Jenny Pry and
Rachel Smicker each contributed seven kills while sophomore setter
Andrea Heimsoth added three service aces to complement 23 assists.
Freshman
Mariah Mahlendorf added five kills off the bench without an attack error. Sophomore
Erin Flick started and added four kills and two block assists. Defensively, sophomore libero
Lauren Murphy totaled 19 digs.
In the team's second match of the day, the Lady Raiders convincingly dispatched the Rams by set scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-16. SU totaled 41 kills and took advantage of a Shepherd squad that finished the match with a negative hitting percentage.
SU faces Davis & Elkins at 9 a.m. Saturday and will face West Virginia State at 3 p.m.
