SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Friday was a difficult afternoon for the Shippensburg University baseball team from Fairchild Field as the Red Raiders dropped both games of a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader to seventh-place East Stroudsburg, 5-4 and 10-4.
Shippensburg (11-26, 5-9 PSAC East) was trailing 5-0 in the opener and nearly rallied to tie the score. In the bottom of the sixth inning, junior first baseman
Kris Kullman got the Red Raiders on the scoreboard with a two-run homer with one out. The next batter, junior center fielder
AJ Czap, slugged a solo home run to make the score 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore shortstop
Ben Miller led off by reaching on an error before sophomore left fielder
Tyler Uphouse singled to put runners on first and third. Sophomore right fielder
Cody Kulp hit a sacrifice fly to plate Miller and Kullman drew a two-out walk to put the tying run on second base, but a pop up to first base ended the game.
East Stroudsburg (13-15, 4-10 PSAC East) never trailed in the second game and broke the nightcap open with four runs in the sixth inning and two more runs in the seventh inning. SU got four doubles in the game, including two from freshman catcher
Kyle Hollingsworth, and was within two runs of the lead in the fifth inning.
A pair of sophomore southpaws took the mound for the Red Raiders but neither could achieve a victory.
Nick Umberger gave up five earned runs and 10 hits in six innings of the opener while
Ryan Rehman allowed five earned runs and 10 hits with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings of the second game.
The Red Raiders will travel to Mitterling Field tomorrow for another 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Warriors.
