CLARION, Pa. - The Shippensburg University softball team extended its winning streak to four games on Saturday with another offensive explosion at the plate, scoring 17 runs in an impressive doubleheader sweep of PSAC Central Division opponent Clarion by scores of 9-6 and 8-2.
Shippensburg (11-19) got two doubles and two RBIs in the opener from senior
Lisamarie Ramagli while junior
Courtney Steele went long distance for a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs. SU scored three runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the sixth inning to take control.
Clarion (2-19) built an early 3-1 lead through three innings against sophomore
Emily Parkins and junior
Dana Ward. After a rough start, Ward settled down and held the Golden Eagles to just one earned run over four innings of work to achieve the victory and improve her record to 8-11.
Ramagli hit a two-run double in the fourth inning that tied the score at 3-3 and senior
Kiley Abersold plated pinch runner
Shauna Byrnes with an RBI-single to give SU the lead. In the sixth, Steele parked a two-run shot over the center-field fence before freshman
Kiersten Darhower drove home a run with an infield single and junior
Jill Mullan plated another with a single.
Sophomore
Chelsea Kendall had one of the strongest games of her career in the second game of the doubleheader, scattering five hits and allowing just one run in a complete-game victory. She walked just one batter in the contest.
At the plate in the second game, Mullan hit a leadoff triple and the runs would soon follow. Ramagli, Steele and junior
Moira Johnsen delivered RBI-singles in the frame to help Shippensburg build a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, the Lady Raiders added four more runs with an bases-loaded walk by a Ramagli, a sacrifice fly from junior
Hope Cornell and singles by Steele and Abersold.
Overall, Shippensburg totaled 27 hits in the doubleheader. Five of those hits were off the bat of Johnsen, while six Lady Raiders had three hits. Steele was 3-for-7 with a home run, five RBIs, six total bases and two walks while Ramagli was 3-for-7 with four RBIs, three runs and two walks. Cornell hit a home run, reached base five times and hit a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Raiders will travel to East Stroudsburg at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday for a doubleheader with the Warriors.
