SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior third baseman
Kevin Scholly hit a home run on Senior Day for the 2010 Shippensburg University baseball team but the Red Raiders could not pick up a win against No. 13 West Chester in the home finale, dropping 4-2 and 13-6 decisions to the regionally-ranked Golden Rams.
Shippensburg (12-35, 6-16 PSAC East) got an inspired effort at the plate from junior designated hitter
Jesse Smith, who hit a home run in both games of the doubleheader and finished the day 4-for-7 overall with five RBIs. Sophomore
Nick Umberger delivered a strong start in the opener, throwing a complete game with five strikeouts while allowing just three earned runs and five hits.
The Red Raiders managed just two hits in the opening game, scoring a run in the fourth after a leadoff double by sophomore right fielder
Cody Kulp and another in their final at-bat after Smith's round tripper.
The nightcap featured a lot more runs and was in Shippensburg's favor through three innings as the Red Raiders had built a 5-3 advantage. SU roughed up Golden Ram starter Fred Breidenbach, as Scholly hit his solo home run in the second and Smith hit a two-run bomb in the third. Kulp added a two-run double in the third as well.
West Chester (34-9, 16-6 PSAC East) rallied for eight runs in the next two innings against sophomore
Jimmy Miller, who struck out four batters in his five innings of work. Senior
Kyle Chronister pitched the final two innings in his final home appearance, striking out three batters while allowing two runs on two hits.
Before the doubleheader, Shippensburg recognized Scholly and Chronister, SU's lone seniors, for their contributions to the program. Through two years with the Red Raiders, Chronister has primarily served as a left-handed pitcher in addition to filling occasional pinch-hitting roles. His first appearance as a Red Raider in 2009 was a pinch-hit RBI-single against Belmont-Abbey. In two years on the mound, Chronister has thrown 28 innings and struck out 23 batters.
Earlier this season, Chronister picked up his first collegiate victory with a six-inning win at regionally-ranked IUP, allowing just four hits while striking out eight batters. He has appeared in 19 games as a pitcher and made two starts.
Scholly is the only player to start in every game this season for Shippensburg. Through 164 career games and 149 starts, Scholly has batted .260 with seven home runs, 26 doubles and 81 RBIs. He was a member of the Atlantic Regional Championship team in 2008 that reached the College World Series and batted .288 with 39 RBIs. That season, Scholly was an All-PSAC Western Division Second Team selection at first base. He led the team in 2008 with 39 walks while posting an on-base percentage of .414. As a freshman, Scholly saw limited action with the 2007 squad that won a PSAC Championship.
Wherever he has appeared on the diamond, either first base, third base or even pitcher, Scholly has always been a strong defensive asset. He has also had a knack for getting on base, drawing 68 career walks and getting hit 24 times at the plate. Scholly has also contributed 20 successful sacrifice hits in his career.
Shippensburg concludes its 2010 season at 1 p.m. tomorrow with a divisional doubleheader from West Chester.
