SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team raced out to a 3-0 lead after three innings of its annual clash with regional rival Shepherd on Tuesday afternoon from Fairchild Field but could not contain the Rams during the middle innings, dropping a 7-4 decision to the visitors.

Shippensburg (12-33) got a strong start from freshman Josh Scott, who went three innings and allowed just one hit. The Red Raiders plated one in the first on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Jimmy Miller that brought home sophomore shortstop Eric Herman and got two more runs on the board in the third with an RBI-groundout by senior third baseman Kevin Scholly and an RBI-single by junior center fielder AJ Czap.

Shepherd (21-18), winners of 11 out of its last 13 games, rallied with a solo home run in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth inning against sophomore Ryan Rehman. The decisive frame was the sixth, as the Rams got three runs (two unearned) off freshman reliever David McKolosky.

SU mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning that began with one-out singles from Herman and sophomore right fielder Cody Kulp. Junior catcher Kris Kullman then laced an RBI-single to right field that plated Herman and a throwing error on the play resulted in two runners being in scoring position. However, the Rams silenced the threat after inducing a comebacker by Jimmy Miller and a flyout to the left-field warning track by Scholly.

Five Red Raiders had multiple hits in the contest. Sophomore left fielder Tyler Uphouse went 3-for-4 with an eighth-inning double while Herman had two hits, scored two runs and stole a base. Kulp, Kullman and Jimmy Miller each had two hits as well.

The Red Raiders will conclude their regular season this weekend with home-and-home doubleheaders against West Chester. On Friday, Shippensburg will host at 1 p.m. and will honor its two seniors, Scholly and Kyle Chronister, while also welcoming more than 40 alumni back to campus.

Notes: Sophomore Ted Williams, the team's ERA leader among qualified players, pitched 2.2 hitless innings at the end of the game with two strikeouts. Shepherd took both games of the home-and-home series this year after winning the earlier meeting this season in walk-off fashion, 4-3 at Fairfax Field…the top four hitters in the Shippensburg lineup went 8-for-18 and scored all four of the team's runs…each team left 10 runners on base.
