MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team could not preserve its early leads on Friday afternoon from the Millersville University Baseball Stadium as the Red Raiders dropped a pair of tough one-run decisions to the host Marauders by scores of 3-2 and 5-4. SU has now lost eight games this season by just one run, including its last five setbacks overall and all four of its conference decisions.
Shippensburg (9-20, 4-4 PSAC East) was in control through the first five innings of the opener. SU got a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from sophomore shortstop
Ben Miller and another in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice by junior center fielder
AJ Czap.
Sophomore second baseman
Eric Herman nearly added two more runs for Shippensburg in the fifth inning with a sneaky drag bunt attempt toward first base, but Marauder starter Forrest Mengle fielded his position well and narrowly threw Herman out to end the inning. Mengle threw a complete game for the Marauders, scattering four hits and allowing just one earned run.
Millersville (12-15, 6-6 PSAC East) took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener. A one-out single by Derek Kline put a runner in scoring position and Miles Gallagher followed with a duck snort into short left field that put the Marauders on the board and also moved runners to second and third base.
A jam shot to second base off the bat of Corey Phelan resulted in a play at the plate in which Kline beat the throw to tie the score at 2-2. Adam Boyd then sent a weak liner into left field that put Millersville ahead by a run. Sophomore
Jimmy Miller was the tough-luck loser for SU, scattering seven hits while striking out six in a complete-game effort.
The Red Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the second game after sophomore right fielder
Cody Kulp hit an RBI-double in the first inning and later came around to score on an RBI-single by junior catcher
Kris Kullman. Millersville rallied for three runs in the second inning to take the lead off sophomore starter
Ted Williams.
Trailing 5-3 in the top of the seventh, sophomore left fielder
Tyler Uphouse tripled to lead off and scored on a one-out single by Kullman. Millersville's Zach Eckley entered in relief and induced a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
The Red Raiders will host Millersville at 1 p.m. tomorrow from Fairchild Field.
