KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Shippensburg University softball team began its participation at the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday from the Osceola County Softball Complex with a tough tripleheader against strong national opponents, dropping games to Minnesota State Mankato, Georgian Court and South Dakota.

Shippensburg (3-6) built a 3-0 lead after the first two innings of the second game against the Lions of Georgian Court with a two-run single from sophomore Abby Block and a solo home run from senior Kiley Abersold. It was the first extra-base hit of Abersold's career, as the senior finished the afternoon by reaching base three times in two games.

The Lions scored multiple runs in three of the final four innings to achieve a come-from-behind victory against sophomore Chelsea Kendall. Georgian Court, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), finished its competition at the Rebel Spring Games with an 8-3 overall record.

The final game of the day was against South Dakota, an opponent in transition to Division I. The Coyotes scored five runs on one hit in the opening inning against sophomore Emily Parkins and built a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning despite RBI singles from juniors Courtney Steele and Hope Cornell.

SU continued its rally and brought the score to 6-4 after five innings. Some steady relief pitching from freshman Kiersten Darhower and a two-run single from junior Moira Johnsen kept the Lady Raiders in the game, but South Dakota was able to plate six runs in the sixth inning for the victory.

The opening game was a tough one for the Lady Raiders, as Minnesota State Mankato handed SU a 15-0 defeat in five innings. Junior Jill Mullan and senior Lisamarie Ramagli each hit singles for the Lady Raiders while the Mavericks, an NCAA tournament qualifier for each of the past three seasons, drew seven walks and hit three home runs.

Cornell, who made her season debut, finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate with an RBI and two walks while playing second base and right field. Steele had three hits on the day with an RBI and a run.

The Lady Raiders will play a pair of games on Sunday – the first will be at 9 a.m. against Ashland and the second will be at 1 p.m. against No. 13 Saginaw Valley State.
