SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team opened its home schedule on Wednesday afternoon from Fairchild Field against Wilmington (Del.) by combining with the Wildcats for 23 runs, but the offensive showdown went the way of the visitors as the Red Raiders dropped a 14-9 decision.
Shippensburg (2-15) trailed 8-0 as it entered the bottom of the fourth inning but mounted a rally throughout the second half of the game. The first two runs for the Red Raiders went on the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by senior first baseman
Kevin Scholly and an RBI-single by sophomore designated hitter
Jimmy Miller.
Wilmington (5-3) took a 12-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning when SU got one more back on an RBI fielder's choice by sophomore left fielder
Tyler Uphouse. In the bottom of the eighth inning, sophomore right fielder
Cody Kulp ripped an RBI triple to left and then scored on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 12-5.
The Red Raiders got four more runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. The inning started with two walks, two hit batsmen and a wild pitch that brought home
Jimmy Miller. A sacrifice fly by junior center fielder #A.J. Czap# plated Uphouse, and a single through the right side by junior catcher
Kris Kullman scored sophomore second baseman
Eric Herman and freshman shortstop
Zack Piper.
SU used five pitchers in the game, with the start going to freshman
Kyle Hollingsworth. He suffered the loss, yielding five runs in 2.1 innings. Among the relievers were freshman

Tom Bush.
Shippensburg is scheduled to open conference play on Friday with a home doubleheader at 1 p.m. against Bloomsburg from Fairchild Field.
