SALISBURY, N.C. - The Shippensburg University softball team opened its 2010 season on Friday afternoon from the Catawba Invitational at Salisbury Community Park with a doubleheader split, dropping a 6-1 decision to Lenoir-Rhyne before earning a 2-1 victory in nine innings over Glenville State.
Shippensburg (1-1) received sensational pitching in the second game against the Pioneers, including 7.2 no-hit innings from sophomore
Chelsea Kendall. The game was scoreless through the first seven innings until a sacrifice fly from senior
Lisamarie Ramagli gave SU a 1-0 lead after international tiebreaker rules began in the eighth inning.
Sophomore
Emily Parkins entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning and allowed two walks that resulted in the tying run crossing home plate. Fellow sophomore
Abby Block singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and junior
Dana Ward entered to record the final three outs for a save.
Shippensburg's only scoring in the opener came on a solo home run by junior
Moira Johnsen. Ward pitched the opener and allowed six runs in five innings. Kendall pitched the final two innings without allowing a run.
The Lady Raiders will play at least two more games on Saturday. SU faces Davis & Elkins at 10 a.m. before clashing with Wayne State at 2 p.m.
Full statistics of this weekend's games will be available on Monday.
