BARTON, N.C. – The Shippensburg University baseball team took the field on a sunny, 60-degree Saturday in North Carolina but could not come away with its first victory of the season, as the Red Raiders dropped both games of a doubleheader to Barton, 2-0 and 7-6.
Junior catcher
Kris Kullman had three hits on Saturday including a home run, while sophomore
Nick Umberger was the tough-luck loser in the opener after yielding just two runs on five hits and one walk in a complete-game effort.
Shippensburg (0-6) had just four hits in the opening game but built a 5-0 lead in Game 2. SU got two runs in the first inning with an RBI-single by Kullman and an RBI-groundout by freshman
Kyle Hollingsworth. An RBI-single from sophomore
Eric Herman made it 3-0 in the second inning before the Red Raiders plated two more runs in the third on a solo home run by Kullman and a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Ben Miller.
Barton (4-3) got two runs back in the bottom of the third against junior
Kody Kibler, who made his first start of the year and performed well. Kibler allowed three runs on four hits in five innings. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off senior
Kyle Chronister and sophomore
Ted Williams to rally for the win.
