KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team, the No. 3 seed in the PSAC Eastern Division, suffered a tough 3-1 loss at No. 2 seed Kutztown on Tuesday night in a PSAC Quarterfinal contest from Keystone Hall. Set scores were 23-25, 27-29, 25-20 and 17-25.
It was the second consecutive year that Shippensburg traveled to Kutztown for a conference quarterfinal clash. Last year, SU earned a 26-24, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23 victory that advanced the Lady Raiders to the semifinals. This year, the tables were turned, as both teams struggled offensively but the Golden Bears used solid defense and 14 blocks to gain momentum.
Freshman
Jill Edwards, the PSAC's kills leader, totaled 14 kills and 16 digs. She finishes the season with 15 double-doubles and 458 kills – the second-most in school history behind Jenn Fuhrman (489 in 2000).
Junior
Libby Woffindin totaled 13 kills and five block assists while hitting .188. She finished the season with 329 kills, 45 aces and a school-record 113 block assists.
Sophomore
Andrea Heimsoth had a great match, contributing 34 assists, two timely kills, eight digs and two block assists.
The tough aspect of Tuesday night's match was Shippensburg's proximity to winning each of the first two sets. SU held a 23-21 lead in the first set but conceded four straight points to drop the opening frame. The Lady Raiders had leads of 24-20 and 26-25 in the second set but could not put the Golden Bears away.
