SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – All five starters posted double figures for the Shippensburg University men's basketball team on Tuesday night as the Red Raiders used a 15-0 run in the second half to dispatch Wilmington (Del.), 78-64 from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (2-2), reduced to just eight players due to injury and illness, got career-best performances from all five of its starters – including double-doubles from three players who had never accomplished the feat before Tuesday.
The Red Raiders, who entered the game shooting 46 percent from three-point range, were 11-of-20 on Tuesday night, including a torrid 8-of-13 proficiency in the first half. Overall, SU shot 55 percent or better from the floor in both halves of play.
Trailing by three points with 7:16 to play, SU went on a 15-0 run over the next 5:58 to take control. The Red Raider defense held the Wildcats to 0-of-11 shooting during the run and got points from four of its five starters during the run. A 59-56 deficit was transformed into a 71-59 advantage entering the game's final 90 seconds.
Senior
Jaren Gembe was among the team's expert distance shooters, finishing with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting to lead all scorers. Making his first start of the season, Gembe was 5-of-6 from three-point range.
Junior
Craig Van Scyoc recorded his first career double-double, totaling 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. He was 4-of-8 from the floor, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, and nearly played the entire game but missed a few seconds due to treatment for a cut on his lip.
Senior
Justin Minter stepped up with 17 points, his most in one game since his rookie season, while adding seven rebounds. He was 5-of-8 from the floor and made several key free throws in the second half.
Sophomore
Lamar Jackson had 10 points and dished out a career-high 11 assists for the first double-double of his young career. Jackson had seven assists in the first half alone and also provided key free throws down the stretch. Jackson and Minter were both 6-of-9 from the charity stripe.
Freshman
Dylan Edgar made his presence felt in the post with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for his double-double. Edgar was 4-of-5 from the floor and posted double-digit rebounds for the second straight game.
After making just 2-of-10 free-throw attempts in the game's first 30 minutes, Shippensburg finished the game making 17-of-23 from the charity stripe to help cement the victory. The defense also loomed large, holding the Wildcats scoreless for over five minutes during the crucial run and limiting the opposition to 7-of-33 (21 percent) from the field in the second half.
Wilmington (2-2) got 17 points and nine rebounds from Matthew King along with 11 points from Isiah Mason.
SU returns to action on Wednesday, December 1 with a 7 p.m. home game against Central Penn.
