MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team's offense was in top form on Tuesday evening from Pucillo Gymnasium, with three players totaling 15 or more kills and hitting .200 or better in an explosive 3-1 victory over Millersville. Set scores were 25-19, 25-23, 24-26, and 25-23.
Shippensburg (18-15, 8-10 PSAC) hit .346 and totaled 70 kills, its most in a match since the NCAA shifted away from 30-point sets after the 2007 season. The Lady Raiders had at least 15 kills in each set, hit .484 in the opening frame and .444 in the second set.
Junior
Libby Woffindin had a performance to remember – hitting an incredible .640 from the floor after totaling 17 kills and committing just one attack error. It is her best performance with at least 10 attempts since an errorless 10-kill performance as a freshman against West Virginia Wesleyan in which she hit .833. She also had six block assists – bringing her season total to 112.
Freshman
Jill Edwards paced the Lady Raider attack with 20 kills, hitting .208. She also added two aces and four block assists. It was her 13th double-double of the season with kills and digs. Edwards has racked up more kills (430) than any SU player over the last two years and is the first Lady Raider to reach 400 kills in a season since
Kali Antolik,
Colleen Toomey and Brittany Roche in 2007. She continues to lead the PSAC in total kills.
Sophomore
Jenny Pry ripped 18 kills of her own, committing just three errors and hitting .429. Pry also had six digs and was a consistent offensive force on Tuesday night. Fellow sophomore
Erin Flick also had a whale of a night, contributing eight kills without an error and hitting .421.
An expected byproduct of SU's hitting success was the rate at which sophomore setter
Andrea Heimsoth was racking up assists – totaling 37 along with 12 digs. Junior
Julie Fye delivered 18 assists of her own.
The Lady Raiders have clinched a playoff berth for the fourth consecutive year. SU can finish the season as the No. 2, No. 3 or No. 4 seed. Lock Haven, Kutztown and West Chester have also clinched appearances in the postseason tournament.
Shippensburg concludes the regular season Friday at 7 p.m. from West Chester.
