SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team rebounded from a shaky first half against No. 3 East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon from Robb Sports Complex to score three unanswered goals and achieve an overtime victory over the Warriors, 3-2.
Shippensburg (13-0) fell behind by two goals just 20 minutes into the match but regrouped midway through the opening frame and ultimately held the Warriors without a shot for the game's final 56 minutes and 27 seconds. ESU had one penalty corner during that span but was not credited with a shot during the opportunity.
The Lady Raiders picked up their offensive pressure with several penalty corners late in the opening half. On the team's seventh penalty corner of the frame, sophomore
Emily Kohlbus finished a feed by sophomore
Ashley Taylor with her fourth goal of the season, making the score 2-1 at intermission.
SU added 10 penalty corners in the second half, but did not tie the score until just 5:51 remained on the clock.
Ashley Taylor converted another penalty corner opportunity with her ninth goal of the season off an assist by sophomore
Taylor Jones, tying the score at 2-2 and ultimately sending the game to overtime.
Less than three minutes into the extra session, junior
Kristina Taylor had a chance to win the game but sent a shot off the post. After a brief respite on the sidelines, Taylor re-entered the game and just 15 seconds after her return, she scored her 11th goal of the season to give Shippensburg the victory in sudden death.
Freshman
Carenna Neely relieved sophomore starting goalkeeper
Ciarra Delost and patrolled the cage for the game's final 52:58 but was not forced to make a save.
No. 1 Shippensburg returns to PSAC Western Division play on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when it hosts IUP.
