SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. –
The Shippensburg University football team scored touchdowns on its first five drives of the game during a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium and cruised to a 50-0 Homecoming win over Cheyney to achieve its 400th victory as a NCAA member institution.

Shippensburg (2-6, 1-4 PSAC East) ran for 264 yards as a team and averaged almost five yards per rush while the defense put together its best effort of the season, forcing four turnovers, recording a safety and limiting the Wolves to just 85 total yards on offense.

On the second play from scrimmage, Cheyney tailback Julius Faison dropped a pitch and the resulting fumble was recovered by sophomore nose tackle Mark Kahlil Smith. SU took the lead on the next play, when sophomore quarterback Steven Adams threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to sophomore split end Bryan Barley.

Cheyney (1-7, 1-4 PSAC East) responded with its best drive of the game, reaching as far as the SU 6-yard line on an 11-play drive. A holding penalty negated a potential touchdown for the Wolves, and a combined sack by sophomore Tyrik Clary and senior Erik Van Ness moved the ball back to the 15-yard line.

The Wolves lined up to attempt a 34-yard field goal, but the penetration of the defensive line led junior Terrence Glenn to block the kick and senior Jamahn McCollough to scoop up the ball and return it 11 yards.

From there, the rout was on.

Junior Roshaan McCain capped off the next three drives with rushing touchdowns. He finished the afternoon with 23 yards on six carries. Overall, SU ran the ball 54 times and only had five of those attempts result in negative yards (excluding two quarterback kneels at the end of the game).

Senior Kevin Marshall was a significant figure on several of the game's opening drives. He finished with 67 rushing yards and a touchdown while moving into sole possession of second place on Shippensburg's all-time all-purpose yards list (4,094 – second only to John Kuhn '04).

His efforts led to Offensive Player of the Game honors as awarded by the Shippensburg VFW. The entire defense was named the Player of the Game for pitching SU's first shutout since Sep. 13, 2008 – the first in a 27-game span. Saturday's Homecoming marked the 19th consecutive season that the VFW has honored Red Raider football players.

In total, nine different players posted positive rushing yards for Shippensburg. Sophomore Pat Schuhl had a team-high 14 rushes and finished with 61 yards on the ground. Fellow sophomore Kevin Herod capped off the first-half scoring with a touchdown and totaled 52 yards on eight carries. SU held a 37-0 lead at the intermission.

Saturday's game is the second of the season in which the Red Raider defense has recorded four turnovers in a game. Smith recovered two fumbles overall – with the second coming in the fourth quarter off a jarring hit by freshman linebacker Drew Sneeringer. Senior Andy Horn forced a fumble on the first play of the second quarter that freshman Dainen Green scooped up and returned 40 yards to the Cheyney 5-yard line.

On the Wolves final drive of the game, sophomore Saeed Khateeb recorded a sack-fumble that was recovered by junior Kevin Mosely. In all, the defense held Cheyney to zero or negative yards on 11 of its 51 plays.

Shippensburg will play its final home game of the 2010 regular season next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Millersville. All fans are encouraged to wear red to the game, as a “Red Out” is planned for Senior Day and the final home game in the 21-year career of head coach Rocky Rees.

Head coach Rocky Rees was honored before the game with framed jerseys
sent by three former Red Raiders who have moved on to the NFL:
John Kuhn (30), Brent Grimes (20) and Rob Davis (60).
