SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team was in total control of its PSAC Western Division road match at Slippery Rock on Wednesday afternoon, scoring three times in the first half and playing strong defense throughout its 4-0 victory from N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
Shippensburg (12-0, 4-0 PSAC West) held a 30-0 edge in shots and a 25-0 edge in penalty corners until the final minute of the match - when The Rock entered the SU scoring arc for its first offensive chances of the day.
Freshman
Carenna Neely, who played the final 22 minutes of the match in relief of sophomore
Ciarra Delost, made two saves during the stand and weathered SRU's only penalty corner of the match to secure the team's sixth shutout of the season.
Junior
Katie Pufnock had a great game for Shippensburg and scored the first two goals. The opening tally came at 10:20 when she deflected home a feed from sophomore
Kayla Harshman. She later converted a breakaway at 29:47 off an assist from senior
Amanda Strous.
With less than one minute remaining before intermission, junior
Kristina Taylor scored her 10th goal of the season off a penalty corner feed by sophomore
Ashley Taylor. For
Ashley Taylor, it was her team-leading eighth assist of the season.
Four minutes into the second half, Strous finished a scoring chance with her eighth goal of the season to round out the scoring.
On Saturday, No. 1 Shippensburg will host No. 3 East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m. from Robb Sports Complex in a battle of two of the best teams in Division II.
SU is hosting a breast cancer awareness event in conjunction with the match.
All fans will receive a "Love Versus Cancer" wristband and learn more about the positive influence that hope and heart can have on patients during the fight against breast cancer. Other free giveaways will be provided to fans.
Donations will be accepted before, during and after the game – with all proceeds to benefit the world-renowned breast cancer research department at the Fox Chase Cancer Center.
A "Warriors Wall" will be on display where people can write messages of hope and encouragement to current breast cancer patients in the area. Information will also be available about cutting-edge treatment and research.
