FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team had an outstanding start to its Thursday night match from Joe Retton Arena and finished strong with 17 kills in the final set to ultimately achieve its second victory of the season over WVIAC opponent Fairmont State, 3-1. Set scores were 25-22, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-21.

Shippensburg (12-13) improved to 6-1 against the WVIAC this season and received another outstanding performance by freshman Jill Edwards – who ripped 18 kills, committed just three attack errors and hit .333 for the match. She also had four of Shippensburg's six service aces.

The first set of Thursday's match ended in the exact same fashion that the last set ended on Tuesday night against Millersville – as sophomores Erin Flick and Rachel Smicker combined on a block. Both young players thrive on the block – a fact once again evident against the Falcons as both players finished with a solo block and four block assists.

In fact, Smicker's thunderous kill off a Fairmont State over pass concluded the second set in favor of Shippensburg. The two players combined for 11 kills in the match.

Junior Libby Woffindin maintained her offensive success with 11 kills and a .269 hitting percentage. Sophomore Jenny Pry added a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

On Saturday, Shippensburg will be hosting a “Dig Pink” event from Heiges Field House for its tri-match featuring West Chester and Glenville State. Proceeds will be sought to help the fight against breast cancer.

The program is looking for "team donations" where willing contributors would pledge dollar(s) per dig recorded by teams in their respective matches. Additional donations will be collected, with all contributions going toward the American Cancer Society.

Shippensburg hosts West Chester in a PSAC Eastern Division match at 1 p.m. before the Golden Rams take on Glenville State in a neutral-site match at 3 p.m. SU closes out the day facing the Pioneers at 5 p.m.
