SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University volleyball team once again used its offensive prowess on Tuesday night to overcome a first-set loss and earn a crucial PSAC Eastern Division victory over Millersville, 3-1 from Heiges Field House. Set scores were 22-25, 25-22, 25-13 and 25-23.
Shippensburg (11-13, 4-9 PSAC) continued its knack of finishing sets strong, rallying in the second and fourth frames to earn its decisive edge. The final point came off a combined block by sophomores
Erin Flick and
Rachel Smicker.
Several players hit well, but three stood out in particular. Flick was all over the court, providing significant early momentum and ripping a career-high 13 kills on just two errors - hitting .478. She also had a solo block and two digs. Her previous career high in kills was eight – set earlier this season against Fairmont State.
Sophomore
Jenny Pry also hit .478 for Shippensburg, crushing 12 goals and committing just one attack error. She recorded her sixth double-double of the season by totaling 10 digs in the match.
Freshman
Jill Edwards was once again the pacesetter in terms of total kills, hitting 18 and posting a .292 hitting percentage. It is the 10th consecutive match that Edwards has totaled double-digit kills and the 18th time in 22 matches that she has achieved the feat.
Junior
Libby Woffindin had seven block assists on Tuesday night to bring her season total to 76. Through her first two seasons, Woffindin had totaled 86 block assists – 43 in each campaign.
The offense has continued to be the driving force behind Shippensburg's success. The Lady Raiders have hit .200 or better in nine of their last 10 matches after achieving the feat just twice through the season's first 14 matches.
The Lady Raiders will travel to Fairmont State on Thursday for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Fighting Falcons. SU won the previous meeting between the two teams this season
in five sets.
Notes: All six of Shippensburg's home matches this season have lasted four or five sets…only seven of Shippensburg's 24 matches have ended in straight sets, including a doubleheader at Cheyney…the school record for block assists in one season is 93, set by
Kali Antolik in 2007.
