SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Senior women's basketball forward
Lauren Beckley became the all-time leading scorer in Shippensburg University history on Saturday afternoon from Heiges Field House as the Lady Raiders used a 16-0 run in the second half to pull away from visiting IUP and record a 68-54 victory over the Crimson Hawks.
Shippensburg (7-8), winners of two-in-a-row, had yet another stellar outing from Beckley, who led all players with 30 points and 18 rebounds. It was her sixth double-double this season and the 52nd of her career. She entered the game tied for with
Stacey Cunningham at 2,057 points and achieved the school record in storybook fashion, sinking the game's first shot just 18 seconds into the contest.
IUP (6-5) led by two points at halftime behind 52 percent shooting and 12 points from Lacey Claar. The Crimson Hawks stretched their lead to as many as seven points early in the second half before free throws from Beckley, junior
Kasey Gardner, sophomore
Kaitlin Capriccio and redshirt freshman
Caitlin Bamberger helped the Lady Raiders tie the score with 12:15 to play.
Beckley hit a jumper while being fouled with 9:46 to go that gave the Lady Raiders a two-point lead and the momentum-changing run continued from there. Gardner had a string of six straight points while senior guard
Sheila Wasser converted four free throws during the crucial second-half run. IUP was held scoreless for more than five minutes and committed four turnovers during the stretch.
While 16 of Beckley's points came in the first half, the senior forward was most critical as a rebounder and a free-throw shooter in the second half. After the intermission, Beckley was sent to the line 12 times and the senior forward converted 10 of those opportunities. Thirteen of her season-high 18 rebounds came in the second half.
Gardner was also strong offensively down the stretch, scoring 10 points in the second half. She was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final period and finished the game with 20 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Bamberger provided excellent production from the post, matching her career-high with seven points while adding four rebounds and a steal in 15 minutes on the court. Wasser finished with seven points, four rebounds and one assist.
The Shippensburg defense also clamped down in the second half. The Lady Raiders held IUP to just 25 percent shooting in the second half and forced 13 turnovers while limiting the Crimson Hawks to their lowest point total (19) in a half this season.
SU will face No. 19-ranked California (Pa.) at 1 p.m. tomorrow in another PSAC crossover from Heiges Field House. The Vulcans won the previous meeting this season between the two teams.
