Beth Long made 12 saves as the Lady Raiders scored a huge victory on Saturday night by defeating No. 11 California (Pa.), the top team in the Atlantic Region, by a 2-1 margin from David See Field.
Shippensburg (4-4-2) remained unbeaten at home and capped off a 3-0 week with a stellar defensive performance. Just four minutes into the game, the Lady Raiders gained a lot of momentum when graduate forward
Laura Brown scored in the fourth minute off an assist from Kuntzmann.
Long had 10 saves at halftime and kept the Lady Raiders ahead by one goal at intermission. The Vulcans answered in the 60th minute with a goal by Sam Regney but Andrew responded with a goal in the 72nd minute off the feed from Kuntzmann.
The victory marks the third consecutive season in which head coach
Rob Fulton has guided the Lady Raiders to a victory over a nationally-ranked opponent. Last year, SU closed out its regular season with a convincing 3-1 victory over No. 19 West Virginia Wesleyan. On Sept. 6, 2007, the Lady Raiders recorded a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 3 West Chester that snapped a 42-game regular season winning streak for the Golden Rams.
