SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The dazzling goaltending of graduate keeper
Beth Long and a second-half goal from senior forward
Gayle Kuntzmann helped the Shippensburg women's soccer team weather a 30-shot attack in a 1-1 draw with East Stroudsburg on Tuesday afternoon from David See Field.
Shippensburg (1-3-2, 1-1-2 PSAC East) allowed a goal to talented ESU striker Devin Miniscalco in the first half but dictated the play in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. In the 53rd minute, Kuntzmann was able to convert a knockdown pass from sophomore
Cassie Armold with her third goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1. Kuntzmann nearly had a second goal just five minutes later but her shot into the net was erased by an offsides call.
The Lady Raiders also had two dynamite scoring chances in the first half. In the 23rd minute, Kuntzmann was fouled in the box but her left-footed penalty kick attempt was thwarted by a diving stop from ESU keeper Melissa Myers. Just 13 minutes earlier, junior
Amanda Greenawalt had a point-blank shot that was blocked on the goal line by Warrior defender Carly Collins.
On the other side, Miniscalco had several scoring chances in the overtime period. In the final minute of the first overtime period, Miniscalco found some space and ripped a shot that Long deflected off the goalpost. The Warrior striker finished with seven shots on goal in the game.
Long made several point-blank saves in the contest, finishing with six saves in the first half, nine in the second half and two in the overtime periods. Her 17 total saves is a new career-high, surpassing her previous mark of 15 set twice during her career.
The Lady Raiders will return to action this weekend with a road matchup at Millersville. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
