Gayle Kuntzmann struck for a goal in the fourth minute of play on Saturday night from David See Field and the Lady Raider soccer team opened their home schedule with the team's first victory of the season, earning a 1-0 shutout over PSAC Eastern Division rival Bloomsburg.
Shippensburg (1-3-1, 1-1-1 PSAC East) recorded its second consecutive shutout and once again received strong goalkeepering from graduate
Beth Long, who made seven saves and inched even closer to the school record for career shutouts. She needs just two more shutouts to pass the school record held by Meredith Yakscoe-Markle '06.
The Lady Raiders had several offensive opportunities and nearly struck for multiple goals in the contest. Kuntzmann, who totaled seven shots in the contest, also hit the crossbar twice and had another shot ricochet off the post. Junior
Lisa Findley also hit the crossbar with a shot attempt in the first half.
Bloomsburg (2-2-1, 2-1-1 PSAC East) sustained its first loss in conference play this season despite 13 saves from goaltender Frances Nicoletti. SU out-shot the Huskies by a 19-14 margin and totaled four corner kicks.
Shippensburg will return to action on Wednesday with another PSAC Eastern Division clash with East Stroudsburg that is set to begin at 3 p.m. from David See Field.
