LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Senior outside hitter
Colleen Toomey became the fourth player in school history to obtain 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs on Friday night during the team's first match at the Lock Haven Classic.
Shippensburg (2-7) dropped its opening contest to a swift-serving Northern Kentucky squad by scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-20, but rallied in its second match of the day to sweep Stonehill by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-16.
Toomey needed just one dig on Friday to join Alyssa Kilgore, Missy Pierce and Michelle Doughty among the SU career ranks. She had nine digs against NKU and finished the doubleheader with 22. Toomey currently ranks third in school history for career kills and fourth in digs.
Against the Norse, senior
Kali Antolik led the team offensively with four kills on just one error. The team utilized a 6-2 approach Friday night, as freshman
Andrea Heimsoth contributed eight assists while fellow freshman
Carlee Hutterer had five.
The Lady Raiders had a frenzied blocking effort against the Skyhawks. Antolik again led the team offensively with eight kills while racking up two solo blocks and five block assists. Freshman
Rachel Smicker stepped up with a huge performance, totaling five kills without an error along with a solo block and nine block assists.
Additionally, Toomey contributed seven kills, 14 digs, two solo blocks and a block assist while senior
Hannah Sorber delivered four kills on just one error with five block assists. Defensively, Heimsoth contributed 15 assists and nine digs while Hutterer had nine assists.
Shippensburg returns to action with two more tough contests on Saturday. The Lady Raiders begin the day with a 12 p.m. contest against C.W. Post and a 2 p.m. matchup with Molloy.
