LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University softball team competed in its second extra-inning battle in consecutive days with California (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon from Lawrence Field at the 2009 Atlantic Regional Tournament, but it was the Vulcan pitching staff which held the Lady Raiders scoreless and ended Shippensburg's season with a 2-0 loss.

Shippensburg (26-19) played 26 innings against California (Pa.) over the last two days, but the Lady Raiders could only plate two runs. The loss ends the season for Shippensburg and concludes the playing careers for seniors Rachelle Wedell, Lori Knopf and Chelsea Carson.

Sophomore Dana Ward had another outstanding effort both from the circle and at the plate. She threw a complete-game, nine-hitter and threw nine innings while striking out nine batters. At the plate, she was 4-for-4 with two stolen bases. The closest she came to scoring was in the sixth, when she was thrown at the plate after a single by Carson.

Wedell, along with sophomores Hope Cornell and Jill Mullan each added hits for Shippensburg. The team left the bases loaded in the second inning, while each tem left nine runners on base in the game.

Sonia Petrosoniak entered in relief for the Vulcans and threw 7.2 shutout innings to improve her record to 11-0. Ward finished the two games against California (Pa.) allowing just three runs through 21.2 innings to go along with 19 strikeouts.

The finals of the regional pool will feature the Vulcans and No. 2 Lock Haven.
