LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Sophomore
Courtney Steele hit a home run in the bottom of the second inning off Kristen Erb but the Shippensburg University softball team was eliminated from the PSAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon from Lawrence Field with an 11-1 loss to No. 3 Lock Haven in five innings.
Shippensburg (25-17), who competed in its first PSAC Tournament since 2006, will now await the final regional rankings from the NCAA. The Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 10 at a site to be determined.
In Saturday's contest, Shippensburg used four pitchers. Freshman
Karen Strychowski earned the start and faced nine batters, working 1.1 innings. Senior
Lori Knopf entered in relief and pitched three innings, while freshman
Chelsea Kendall and
Emily Parkins closed out the fifth inning.
In terms of bragging rights, Steele's accomplishment was a rare feat against Erb, who had not given up a home run during the entire season. The round tripper ended Erb's streak of 314 consecutive innings pitched without allowing a home run - a run that dated back to the 2008 regional tournament.
Lock Haven (40-5) will host the championship finals in eight days on Sunday, May 3. Kutztown won the Eastern Division pool, while Bloomsburg rallied with two victories on Saturday to upset California (Pa.). The Golden Bears will face the Huskies with the winner playing in the PSAC Championship game against the Lady Eagles.
