LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University softball team played back-to-back-to-back games on Friday afternoon from Lawrence Field in the 2009 PSAC Softball Tournament and eliminated Slippery Rock by scores of 3-2 and 11-5. After a 7-0 loss in game two, SU now faces a pair of must-win games on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Lock Haven.

Shippensburg (25-16) had just five hits in the opening game but received a clutch performance from sophomore Moira Johnsen. She opened the scoring with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth that scored sophomore pinch runner Maggie Sander and she won the game with a walkoff sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.

The Rock (21-23) trailed 1-0 in the top of the seventh and was one out away from being shutout before a two-run double from Jess Kortz gave the West's No. 3 seed a 2-1 lead. Senior Lori Knopf settled down and finished the opener with seven strikeouts in another complete-game performance.

Knopf, the only player to get a hit in all three games on Friday, singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and then sophomore Dana Ward reached on a bunt single. Senior Chelsea Carson then put down a perfect bunt and reached on a single, but an errant throw allowed Knopf to score and the runners to advance. Johnsen then followed with her sacrifice fly.

In the second game, Lock Haven was the visiting team and raced out to runs in each of the first four innings. The Lady Eagles hit three home runs while Shippensburg was only able to get hits from Knopf and junior Lisamarie Ramagli.

Freshman Chelsea Kendall pitched the final two innings of the game and was impressive, allowing just one hit while throwing a wicked breaking ball to Erin Clary that went for a strikeout. Ward started the game and pitched three innings while Knopf relieved and pitched two innings.

The final game of the day was a doozy. Ward started and allowed a run in the first inning but the Lady Raiders rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth to take a two-run lead. An RBI-single from Ramagli, a bases-loaded walk from Carson and an RBI-fielder's choice from Shippensburg got the team on the scoreboard.

The Rock responded with four runs off Ward and Knopf in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. The big hit came with a bases-loaded, two-out single from Whitney Warmus, whose hit rolled off the glove of sophomore left fielder Jill Mullan and allowed all three runners to score.

Shippensburg did not take long to re-gain the lead. A two-run triple from Mullan amended the error from the previous inning and tied the score at 5-5 while an RBI-single from senior Rachelle Wedell gave the Lady Raiders the lead. Another run in the inning scored on an error to extend the lead by one run.

A four-run seventh inning clinched the victory. With two outs, back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases for sophomore Hope Cornell. She delivered an RBI-single and then sophomore Courtney Steele cleared the bases with a three-run double.

Saturday's action can be heard on Shippensburg University student radio station WSYC-FM, available online here.
