LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University softball team will be making its first appearance in the PSAC Softball Tournament since 2006 on Friday afternoon as pool play begins at Lock Haven University. The Lady Raiders will play in the opening game against West No. 3 seed Slippery Rock at 11 a.m.
Shippensburg (23-15, 11-5 PSAC East), the No. 2 seed from the Eastern Division, has won eight of its last 10 games entering the postseason and features a lineup with seven players batting .314 or better. The Lady Raider pitching staff has also thrown 10 consecutive complete games and the squad has a 14-3 record this season in games started by the team's No. 1 pitcher, senior
Lori Knopf.
Slippery Rock, who is making its first PSAC Tournament appearance since 1984, is scheduled to finish its season today against Lake Erie. The Rock earned the No. 3 seed after inclement weather forced today's cancellation of the doubleheader between Edinboro and California (Pa.).
The conference therefore determined the seeding by conference winning percentage, giving the second seed to Edinboro despite The Rock defeating the Fighting Scots in three-of-four games this season.
Nine teams qualified for the 2009 PSAC Tournament, with three schools hosting pools of play based on their No. 1 seeds. The winners of each pool will advance to a single-elimination championship tournament next weekend after the conclusion of final exams.
Kutztown, the No. 1 seed from the East, will host the West's No. 2 seed, Edinboro and the Central's No. 3 seed, Mansfield. The West's top seed, California (Pa.), will host the Central's No. 2 seed Bloomsburg and the East's No. 3 seed East Stroudsburg.
