SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - After totaling 17 runs, 30 hits and two complete games in its doubleheader sweep of PSAC East rival Millersville on Thursday afternoon, the Lady Raider softball team clinched the No. 2 seed from the Eastern Division for next week's PSAC Softball Tournament. SU won both of its games in six innings by scores of 8-0 and 9-1.

Shippensburg (22-14, 10-4 PSAC East) finished its home schedule with victories in seven of eight games held at Robb Field, with the only loss coming in a close game to No. 9 Kutztown. Senior Lori Knopf and sophomore Dana Ward have combined to pitch every inning of those eight games, allowing just eight runs.

On Thursday, the Lady Raiders had 15 hits in each of its clashes with the Marauders. While the offensive stars were plentiful on the afternoon, perhaps none shone brighter than that of catcher Rachelle Wedell, one of three seniors recognized in ceremonies held between games. In the nightcap, Wedell went 4-for-4 and finished the day with five hits (including three doubles), three runs and two RBIs.

Knopf once again took care of work from the circle in Game 1, extending her career-high in wins to 13 for the season after throwing a four-hit shutout through six innings. She finished the regular season with a 5-0 record in five starts at home with five complete games, allowing just three runs in 34 innings while striking out 24 batters.

Ward, who pitched a complete game for the victory in Game 2, was also 4-for-5 at the plate and reached base seven times over the two games. She went 2-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base in the nightcap after going 2-for-3 with two runs and a steal in the opener. From the circle, Ward allowed just one run on four hits while striking out seven batters.

Sophomore Hope Cornell joined Wedell and Ward by reaching base in all of her Game 2 plate appearances. She was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, walk and a run scored in the nightcap and finished the afternoon with five hits.

Senior Chelsea Carson, the team's third senior, also had a productive afternoon at the plate. She smoked an RBI-double off the wall in the second game and finished the day with two hits and a run.

One round tripper was hit on the afternoon and that came courtesy of junior Lisamarie Ramagli, who crushed a shot over the left-field fence in Game 1. Ramagli finished the afternoon with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored.

Sophomore Jill Mullan had three hits in the opener, while sophomore Moira Johnsen had a double, two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Sophomore Courtney Steele had three hits and two RBIs.

Nine teams qualify for the PSAC Tournament, as the top three seeds in each division will advance next weekend to one of three championship sites. Shippensburg, by virtue of its No. 2 seed in the East, will travel to the No. 1 seed in the Central, either Lock Haven or Bloomsburg. The double-elimination pool will also feature the No. 3 seed from the Western Division.

Tomorrow, Shippensburg concludes its regular season with a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader at East Stroudsburg. The Lady Raiders will battle the Warriors beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Sunday doubleheader scheduled at Philadelphia has been canceled.
