FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Sophomore shortstop
Steve McCardell became the third player in school history to record six hits in a game on Friday morning as the Shippensburg University baseball team concluded a three-game stretch from the Lawnwood Complex in Fort Pierce with an 18-8 victory over Northwood (Mich.) University.
Shippensburg (6-11) recorded 33 runs in its three games from Fort Pierce, including 18 runs and 21 hits on Friday against the Timberwolves. More importantly, the Raiders continued their defensive success by not committing an error for the third straight game.
McCardell finished Friday's game 6-for-6 at the plate, tying the school record for hits originally set in April of 1982 against Juniata by SU Hall of Famer Jeff Taylor and by Jay Kipp in March of 1992 against Sacred Heart.
Another offensive star on Friday was senior
Tyler Redick, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and a single. The Raiders used five pitchers in the contest, with senior
Jason Kelly making the start and freshman
Nick Umberger earning the win in relief.
Shippensburg is now headed back to Pennsylvania but will next play in Delaware, facing Wilmington on Tuesday in a single game at 3 p.m. The Raiders open PSAC Eastern Division play on Friday at Bloomsburg before hosting the Huskies on Saturday from Fairchild Field.
