KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Shippensburg University softball team battled and stayed right in check with No. 12 Kutztown in the opening game of its doubleheader on Monday afternoon from North Campus Field but the Lady Raiders were eventually defeated in both games by scores of 4-1 and 9-1.

Shippensburg (15-13, 3-3 PSAC East) struggled at the plate in the two games, scoring just two runs in 12 innings. Sophomore Jill Mullan hit a double in the second game that was the lone extra-base hit for the Lady Raiders, while five other players had singles.

The Lady Raiders opened the first game with a run in the first inning. Senior Rachelle Wedell singled with one out, sophomore Hope Cornell walked and then with two outs junior Lisamarie Ramagli singled home Wedell to give SU a 1-0 lead.

Kutztown (30-6, 6-0 PSAC East) tied the game with two outs in the fourth inning when Michelle McGinty drew a bases-loaded walk. The run ended the scoreless streak of senior Lori Knopf at 26 innings but a strikeout to the next batter ended the inning and kept the score at 1-1.

The decisive runs of the opening game came in the bottom of the seventh. After recording the first two outs of the inning, Knopf gave up a walk and a single, and catcher Ashley Fitzgerald promptly hit a walk-off home run to give the Golden Bears the victory.

In the second game, the Golden Bears hit three home runs, including two from Division II-record holder Steph Denlinger and a walk-off shot from Heather Hannum. Kutztown raced out with four runs in the first inning and two in the second inning to take a commanding lead.

Shippensburg will attempt to play West Chester for the third time this season on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. from Robb Field. The first two meetings between the two teams were postponed due to rain.
