SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Shippensburg University baseball team recorded 10 hits on Wednesday afternoon against regional rival Shepherd but could not muster enough runs to counter a six-run barrage in the final three innings from the homestanding Rams, who defeated the Raiders 8-3 from Fairfax Field.
Shippensburg (12-17) got its first run in the fourth inning after senior center fielder
Tyler Redick doubled and scored on a ground out by freshman right fielder
Cody Kulp tied the score at 1-1. Shepherd countered with a run in the fifth but the Raiders once again tied the score in the sixth with a pinch-hit, RBI-double off the bat off freshman
Jimmy Miller.
Shepherd (12-10), a squad ranked No. 10 in the most recent NCBWA regional poll, broke the game open with a two-out, three-run home run in the sixth off senior
Jason Kelly and three more runs in the seventh against freshman
Nick Umberger and sophomore
Kody Kibler.
In the eighth inning, Shippensburg scratched across one more run after sophomore shortstop
Steve McCardell singled and eventually scored on a single from junior
Kevin Scholly. McCardell was 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to seven games. Freshman third baseman
Ben Miller also went 2-for-4.
The Raiders received a steady performance from freshman starting pitcher
Ryan Rehman, who allowed one earned run and strike out five batters in 4.2 innings pitched. Rehman also allowed three hits and three walks.
Shippensburg returns to action this weekend with a four-game series against PSAC Eastern Division opponent Millersville. On Friday, the Raiders host the Marauders from Fairchild Field in a doubleheader that will be broadcast by the Marauder Sports Broadcasting Network (MSBN). First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
