KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Shippensburg University softball team continued its explosive hitting with 15 runs on Monday in contests against Mount Olive College and Wilmington (Del.) University, earning a five-inning victory in the morning over the Trojans by an 11-3 margin before falling in the afternoon to the Wildcats, 6-4.
Shippensburg (5-5) exacted revenge in its first game of the day against Mount Olive, a squad that swept the Lady Raiders in the season opener. The team batted around, scoring in all five innings and slugging five extra-base hits against the Trojans, and has now 34 runs over the past two days.
Sophomore second basewoman
Hope Cornell belted two home runs against Mount Olive and finished the game with five RBIs. She hit a solo home run in the first inning, a three-run shot in the fifth inning and also manufactured a run after getting hit by a pitch in the fourth inning.
Fellow sophomore
Courtney Steele maintained her 10-game hitting streak to start the season, singling through the left side in the first inning of the contest with Wilmington. Against Mount Olive, Steele ended the first game with a solo home run after smacking a two-run single in the third inning that scored sophomores
Jill Mullan and
Dana Ward.
Freshman
Chelsea Kendall earned her second victory of the season by pitching four innings against the Trojans, allowing three runs while striking out two batters. Senior pitcher
Lori Knopf pitched 5.2 innings of relief and struck out five batters in the loss to the Wildcats.
Other offensive contributors on Monday included sophomore
Michelle Gillman, who hit an RBI-double and had two walks and two runs against Mount Olive, senior catcher
Rachelle Wedell, who combined for three hits on Monday while scoring twice, and freshman right fielder
Abby Block, who hit a solo home run and totaled two RBIs against Wilmington.
Shippensburg now has two days off before facing Urbana on Thursday at 9 a.m. and Mary at 1 p.m.
