SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University baseball team split a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader with Bloomsburg for the second consecutive day at Fairchild Field, winning the opener on Saturday against the Huskies 12-5 before dropping the nightcap, 8-4.

Shippensburg (8-14, 2-2 PSAC East) scored 12 unanswered runs in the opening game after trailing 5-0 through the first two innings. Freshman Nick Umberger dazzled in relief and earned the victory, scattering three hits over 5.1 scoreless innings of work.

The Raiders smacked 15 hits in the opener, with sophomore shortstop Steve McCardell finishing 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Senior center fielder Tyler Redick went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, two walks and three runs while freshman right fielder Cody Kulp was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks and two runs.

A five-run fourth inning was the key for Shippensburg, as the Raiders plated runs in the inning on a bases-loaded walk from Redick, an RBI fielder's choice from McCardell, a two-run single from Kulp and a wild pitch. SU chased Husky starter Mike Rossetti by getting the first five batters of the inning to reach base.

Bloomsburg (10-9, 2-2 PSAC East) scored its first six runs of Game 2 without recording a hit and finished the game with just four. Despite scoring eight runs in the game, the Huskies had just three RBIs, all from third baseman Jarrod Kramer.

The Huskies loaded the bases to start the game on two walks and a hit batsmen. A double play plated one run, and a wild pitch from SU freshman starter Ryan Rehman scored the second. Shippensburg tied it at 2-2 in the second after an RBI-double from junior Kevin Scholly and an RBI-single from junior Rick Shumway.

Bloomsburg got two more runs in the third inning on a fielding error and a foul-out to the second baseman but extended the bizarre theme of the game with four runs in the fourth inning on just one hit. With two outs and the bases loaded following walks that started the inning, a fielding error resulted in two more runs and a two-run single that followed gave the Huskies eight runs on just one hit.

Rehman took the loss in Game 2 after allowing six runs and six walks through three-plus innings. Junior Kasey Kuhns was the only Raider with multiple hits in both games, finishing the day 4-for-7 with three RBIs.

Shippensburg will host a doubleheader on Tuesday from Fairchild Field against PSAC Western Division opponent IUP. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
