Lisamarie Ramagli helped the Shippensburg University softball team survive a four-run comeback from West Virginia State and win its opening game of the Glenville State Tournament on Friday morning, 5-4.
Shippensburg (9-6) exploded with four runs in the opening inning after a three-run home run from sophomore third basewoman
Courtney Steele and a solo blast from Ramagli. The Lady Raiders smacked 13 hits in the contest, including five in the first two innings.
West Virginia State (7-3) rallied with two runs in the third inning off senior starting pitcher
Lori Knopf that brought the score to 4-3. Knopf recorded a no decision in the contest and allowed just one earned run in 4.1 innings, allowing five hits while striking out four batters.
After the Yellowjackets tied the score on an RBI-single in the top of the sixth, the Lady Raiders countered with the victory in their final at-bat. Sophomore second basewoman
Hope Cornell led off the seventh with a single and was replaced on the base paths by sophomore
Maggie Sander. After advancing to second on a groundout, Sander scored on Ramagli's single.
Freshman pitcher
Karen Strychowski earned the victory in relief, pitching the final 2.1 innings and allowing just one run on four hits to go along with a strikeout.
Steele finished the game 2-for-4 with the three-run home run, while Ramagli was 2-for-4. Cornell continued her hot hitting with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate along with a walk, while sophomore left fielder
Jill Mullan went 3-for-4 with a run.
Shippensburg returns to action on Saturday with three games from the Glenville State Tournament. The Lady Raiders take on Seton Hill at 10 a.m., followed by Charleston at noon and Salem International at 4 p.m.
