KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Shippensburg University softball team began its 10-game participation in the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday morning from sunny Florida with a 7-2 defeat of PSAC Western Division regional opponent Edinboro before dropping a 7-0 decision to No. 13 Lewis.
Shippensburg (3-3) cruised to victory over the Fighting Scots with three runs in the opening inning, capped off by a two-run homer from sophomore second basewoman
Hope Cornell. Cornell had two hits and three RBIs, while freshman
Jill Mullan was 3-for-3 with a double, RBI, walk and a run in the opener.
Senior pitcher
Lori Knopf threw her second complete game of the season in the victory over Edinboro, scattering just three hits before allowing a two-run home run in the seventh inning. She struck out four batters for her second win of the season and was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Other offensive highlights for Shippensburg included a two-run double in the opener for senior center fielder
Chelsea Carson, and a solid performance from junior first basewoman
Lisamarie Ramagli, who finished game one with a double, two walks and a run.
In the nightcap, No. 13 Lewis got a dominant pitching performance from Courtney Lyons, who spun a seven-inning shutout and allowed just four hits while striking out six batters.
Shippensburg continues its competition in the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Lewis and a 3 p.m. matchup with the New York Institute of Technology.
