Knopf and Kendall thrive in the circle; Ward goes 3-for-3

WILSON, N.C. - The Shippensburg University softball team received outstanding starts from senior Lori Knopf and freshman Chelsea Kendall while totaling nine runs in a doubleheader sweep of Barton College on Saturday afternoon from Jeffries Field by scores of 4-1 and 5-1.

Shippensburg (2-2) received a complete game in the opener from Knopf, who scattered five hits and allowed just one run while striking out six for her first victory of the season. Kendall made her debut for the Lady Raiders in game two and spun a gem, pitching six innings while allowing just an unearned run and three hits with eight strikeouts.

Sophomore Dana Ward had a breakout game at the plate in the nightcap, reaching base in all four of her plate appearances. Ward went 3-for-3 with a triple, RBI, walk, three runs and three stolen bases to propel the Lady Raiders to the sweep.

The Lady Raiders finished with seven stolen bases in the doubleheader, as sophomore Maggie Sander swiped two bases in the first game and freshmen Rochelle Troise and Meg Lehman each had one steal.

Sophomore third basewoman Courtney Steele clubbed a solo home run in the first game and belted a double in game two, finishing the doubleheader 3-for-7 with two RBIs. Senior center fielder Chelsea Carson had hits and RBIs in both games, finishing the day 2-for-8 with a double.

The Lady Raiders will return to action with competition from the 2009 Rebel Springs in sunny and warm Florida. Shippensburg will play 10 games over seven days, with the first coming on Saturday against Edinboro at 9 a.m.
