SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University field hockey team matched a school record for goals in a single game on a sunny Thursday afternoon from Robb Sports Complex as the Lady Raiders celebrated their final regular season home game with a convincing 10-1 victory over Division II independent Seton Hill.
Shippensburg (18-1) honored its seven senior members before the game and also received goals from seven different players in the contest. The Lady Raiders compiled 27 shots on goal in the contest, including 17 in the first half, to complement 12 penalty corners. SU scored six minutes into the game, raced out to a 6-0 halftime lead and never looked back.
Sophomore
Kristina Taylor recorded the first four-goal game of her career and capped off her scoring on the afternoon with a sensational stick-handling adventure through three separate defenders for a whimsical goal that gave Shippensburg an 8-0 lead in the second half. Taylor temporarily moved atop the national rankings for goals with 23 this season, as Bloomsburg's Amanda Riley is currently three scores behind her with one game in hand.
Six different players contributed one goal in addition to Taylor's outburst. Senior
Mariah Wooters opened the scoring at the 5:58 mark, and the eventual game-winning goal came less than three minutes later when junior
Amanda Strous crowded the cage and fought for her seventh goal of the season off an assist from senior
Jamie Doughty.
Sophomore
Katie Pufnock and freshman
Sam Langone also scored first-half goals for Shippensburg, with Langone's tally being a nifty redirect off an entry feed from fellow freshman
Jordyn Beam. Senior
Laura Wylde scored a goal in the second half off an assist from fellow senior
Lauren Hollingsworth and freshman
Ashley Taylor closed out the SU scoring with a goal at 59:31.
All three goaltenders saw action for Shippensburg on Thursday, with senior
Amanda Houser spending almost 50 minutes in the cage and making two saves. Freshman
Ciarra Delost made three stops in the final 10:08 of the first half while sophomore
Alyssa Stefanadis closed out the final 10:35 of the match.
Seton Hill (6-10) prevented the Lady Raiders from their 12th shutout of the season by scoring with 3:23 to play. Griffin goalkeepers Nadine Wallace and Brittany Parker combined to make 17 saves while the team fired six shots on goal in the contest.
The 2009 senior class - Doughty, Hollingsworth, Houser,
Lois Kaschenbach,
Kim Tully, Wooters and Wylde - have compiled a 65-20 record over their careers while qualifying for the PSAC tournament in all four seasons and helping the team last season to its first-ever victory in the national tournament.
Shippensburg will conclude its regular season on Saturday with a road contest at Mansfield that begins at noon. The Lady Raiders will host the PSAC Tournament on October 30-31 from Robb Sports Complex. The semifinal matches will be held that Friday at 12 and 2:30 p.m. with the conference championship game being held on Halloween at 1 p.m.
Notes: SU previously scored 10 goals in a game on Oct. 18, 2005 in a 10-0 victory over Mansfield...Taylor has now moved into 10th place in Lady Raider scoring history with 37 goals through 39 career games.
