SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University basketball teams will be traveling west this weekend to renew its rivalries with two familiar opponents in the second of two conference-mandated crossover doubleheaders. The Raiders will take on Indiana (Pa.) at 1 and 3 p.m. this Saturday before taking on California (Pa.) at 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Both games on Saturday and Sunday are scheduled for broadcast on Shippensburg student radio station WSYC-FM (88.7), available for listening online
here. The only reason for the broadcasts to not go off as scheduled is if the board operators are unable to make it to the station due to the expected Winter weather that will strike the Cumberland Valley this weekend.
WOMEN'S TEAM CAPSULES FROM THE PSAC
Shippensburg has lost five of its last six contests since earning a No. 15 ranking in the WBCA poll, including 4-in-a-row for the first time since the 2005-06 season … Junior forward
Lauren Beckley recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 25 points and 16 rebounds in a 70-61 loss to Slippery Rock on Sunday … The Lady Raiders have failed to reach 70 points in their last six games after reaching that plateau in four of their first five games … Shippensburg returns to action with crossovers on Saturday and Sunday against IUP and California (Pa).
Indiana (Pa.) lost at Millersville and defeated West Chester in its first set of crossover games, with the loss to the Marauders only the second in 23 crossover games for the Crimson Hawks over the past four seasons … IUP scored only 42 points versus Millersville, tied for the third lowest total in school history and the fewest since a 54-39 loss to Clarion in 2004 … Jahzinga Tracey had seven steals in the two games to take over the IUP career lead in that category with 322 … With 1,693 points, she moved within 30 points of becoming the all-time leading scorer in school history and rose to third on the career rebounding chart with 884 … Staci Heberling is only 23 points away from becoming the 17th player in school history to reach the 1,000 plateau … Lacey Claar was held scoreless at Millersville but bounced back to hit four three-pointers versus West Chester.
California (Pa.) has won six of their last seven games after posting PSAC Crossover road wins against West Chester and Millersville - two of the top teams in the Eastern Division - over the weekend … Junior Brooque Williams posted a double-double in both games, giving her seven for the season and 16 in her career … Against the Golden Rams, Kayla Smith scored a season-high 27 points after shooting 10-of-13 from the floor … Williams finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds against West Chester … Senior Lindsay Johnson posted one of the best games in her career against the Marauders, finishing with 23 points and 14 rebounds … Williams scored a game-high 27 points after making a season-best 11-of-12 attempts from the free-throw line … Williams and Johnson are both within reach of reaching the 1,000-point plateau … Williams has totaled 985 points, while Johnson has 951 points.
MEN'S TEAM CAPSULES FROM THE PSAC
Shippensburg improved to 8-3 after surviving a last-second shot from Slippery Rock on Sunday in a 70-69 victory … Shippensburg played excellent first half defense against The Rock, a team that entered the contest averaging 93.5 points per game … SU held The Rock to 25 points and a 27.8 field-goal percentage in the opening 20 minutes … The Raiders were the runners-up at the prestigious Porreco Cup after losing on Tuesday to No. 4 Gannon … Junior
Stephon Draper was named to the all-tournament team and scored in double digits in all four of SU's games this week … Shippensburg returns to action with crossovers on Saturday and Sunday against IUP and California (Pa).
Indiana (Pa.) extended its winning streak to seven with crossover victories at Millersville and West Chester … The streak is the longest since an 11-game run in 2004-05 … The Crimson Hawks swept a road crossover weekend for the first time since defeating Millersville and Cheyney in 2006-07 … Gerald Brooks had his second double-double of the season with 24 points and 12 rebounds in a 76-66 win at Millersville, coming within three points of his career high and equaling the highest total for any IUP player so far this season … He had 15 points in the second half to help IUP erase a 10-point deficit … In a 60-57 win at West Chester, Brooks scored 17 points, including an offensive rebound and basket with 18 seconds left to put the Crimson Hawks in front to stay in a seesaw contest that saw six lead changes in the final 2:12 … Ashton Smith matched his season high with 16 points versus the Golden Rams.
California (Pa.) lost three-straight games during holiday play, including losses in PSAC Crossover play against West Chester and Millersville … Cal U lost in the first day of the Ashland Holiday Inn Express Classic to Aquinas before defeating Humber (Ontario) in an exhibition due to the Hawks status with the NCAA … Cal U made a season-high 12 three-pointers and shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the field in the loss to Aquinas … The Vulcans nearly pulled off a last-minute comeback against West Chester after senior guard Kenny Johnson scored 12 of his team-high 25 points in the final 1:33 of the game … Forward Samba Fall posted a season-high 11 points against the Golden Rams … Cal U is on a three-game losing streak for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
